Zalando sent its first parcel last week from a new distribution centre near Verona, Italy. Together with logistics provider Fiege, it serves Italian customers from a 130,000-square-metre distribution centre.

From the XXL distribution centre, Zalando serves not only Italian customers, but also customers in southern France, Spain, Austria and Switzerland. Fiege takes care of the daily operations at the premises, where around 1,000 staff can work. On the logistics site - besides the distribution centre - there are also sports fields and lounges.

"This is an important milestone for our European fulfilment network and our success story in Italy. By building a new fulfilment centre, we are adding capacity to our network and bringing relevant offers closer to our Italian customers," explained Riccardo Vola, director Southern Europe at Zalando.

"A project of this size is always a big challenge," continued Alberto Birolini, Managing Director at Fiege. "The team is focused on successfully launching and scaling up the operation. Particular attention is currently being paid to the recruitment process."

Fiege and Zalando work together in more countries. The logistics service provider handles logistics activities for Zalando in Germany and Poland, among others.
