The online food retail market is on the rise. In 2018, consumers had €1.4 billion worth of food products delivered, up a whopping 29 per cent. Demand for meal delivery also grew.

This is according to the FoodService Institute Netherlands (FSIN). In meal delivery, by platforms such as Deliveroo and Thuisbezorgd, 1.7 billion euros was transacted. That is an increase of 13.4 per cent. According to FSIN, the figures show that the classic supermarket model of weekly groceries is coming under pressure.

Online groceries on the rise

Sales from groceries ordered online rose 39.8 per cent to 1 billion euros. Beverage delivery increased by 11.6 per cent to 226.7 million euros. Delivery of fresh boxes, by parties such as HelloFresh and Marley Spoon, rose 12.5 per cent to 155.3 million euros.

Role of online gets bigger and bigger in food

Both foodservice (restaurants) and food retail (shops) are expected to continue to develop their delivery services in the coming years. "The role of online is not only growing through delivery, mobile ordering is also gaining a foothold in shops and restaurants, following the example of McDonalds' successful 'kiosk kiosks' and associated 'table service'," FSIN writes on its website.
