DHG has signed a long-term agreement with Cainiao Group for the lease of the recently completed Smartlog Hellevoetsluis DC1, a 26,000-square-metre distribution centre. The leased space comprises a warehouse, a mezzanine and office space. Cainiao has been part of the Alibaba Group for three years and specialises in the global dispatch of e-commerce orders.

With this lease, facilitated by property adviser Colliers, Cainiao Group has secured a well-located distribution centre in the Rotterdam region. The site offers excellent connections to the Port of Rotterdam and key logistics corridors leading to the European hinterland.

Alibaba subsidiary

As a subsidiary of the Alibaba Group, Cainiao specialises in e-commerce logistics. The logistics service provider enables online orders to be delivered worldwide within five days. The company has more than 10 million square metres of warehouse space globally. According to its own figures, the company will have dispatched more than one and a half billion international parcels by 2023.

Cainiao is developing its own automation solutions. One example is Zstore, a storage system for bins using mobile robots. These ‘Zeebots’ climb into the racking to retrieve and store bins and transport them to the picking stations.

Large-scale logistics

Smartlog Hellevoetsluis has been developed for large-scale logistics operations, offering modern distribution space that meets the requirements of international supply chain organisations. Logistics service providers Logwise Rotterdam, Ziegler and cable supplier Eland Cables had already established themselves at Smartlog Hellevoetsluis. Cainiao’s choice of this location confirms the appeal of high-quality logistics space at this strategic site.

For DHG, the transaction forms part of its long-term strategy to develop and operate logistics property in locations with a strong logistics position and sustainable market demand.
